Biography:
Miltiades Menelaos Negrepontis was born in Marseille. He was a politician and an economist but also a great lover of sports who played an influential role in the development of sport in Greece in the first three decades of the 20th century. He studied Law at the Universities of Athens and Leipzig. In 1904 he was elected Prefect of the island of Cephallonia. From 1910 until 1920 he had been elected MP for Attica. He served two terms of office as Minister of Finance and took part in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). It was he who set up and ran the military vehicle service during this period. In 1914 he was appointed head of the Committee for the restitution of refugees in Thessaloniki. He served as President of the Olympic Games Committee (1918-1920) and drafted all the necessary legislation for the field of sport . He was a senior ranking official in S.E.G.A.S and on the Board of many other sports Associations in Athens. Apart from being a very competent cyclist he was the editor of the Cycling and Sports Review of the East, the first sports magazine to be published in Greece (1918). Finally, he acted as advisor for the Bank of Greece (from its establishment) and the Hellenic Red Cross. Miltiades Negrepontis died in 1951.
