Biography:
Mountaineer. Born in 1940 in Currie, Haston became a member of the UK team who conquered the south face of Annapurna (1970). He was the first Briton to climb the North Face of the Eiger (Switzerland) in 1966 and the first to climb Changabang in India, (1974). He was involved in the first ascent of the South-West face of Mount Everest (1975), becoming the first Briton to climb that mountain, and the first ascent of the South-West face of Mount McKinlay in Alaska (1975). He was killed in an avalanche while skiing in the Alps in 1977, but is remembered by a plaque on the railway bridge at Currie, where he practised climbing in his youth. Haston was inducted as one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
