Biography:
After the Second World War, no-one could have predicted that Manchester United would achieve what they have over the subsequent 12 seasons. The club was bankrupt; Old Trafford was bombed out. Enter Matt Busby. Having spent the war in the Army Physical Training Corps, the Scottish international wing-half almost returned to Liverpool, the club with whom he had ended his playing career, as coach - but then United stepped in with an offer. The connections and friends that Busby and his family had made in Manchester during his time as a City player probably swung the decision United's way. Busby began work at Old Trafford in October 1945. His style of management was completely different to that of his predecessor, Scott Duncan. Duncan was an administrator at heart, who preferred his desk and his suit. Busby, on the other hand, was the sort who preferred to wear a track-suit, and to coach his players on the training pitch. He also had his own firm ideas on the sort of team that he wanted to produce. He favoured exciting attacking play, and the players that he began to amass reflected that. Above all, he favoured young, home-grown players, and the current first-team, with its collection of fresh-faced youngsters and a mere handful of bought-in stars, reflects Busby's ideals. Busby's first trophy came in 1948, with a 4-2 F.A. Cup Final win over Blackpool at Wembley. He followed this up with three League Championships, in 1951-52, 1955-56 and 1956-57. But the most significant trophies may well turn out to be the 5 consecutive F.A. Youth Cup victories between 1953 and 1957. The players who lifted these trophies are now in the first team, and United seem ideally placed to benefit from Busby's long-term vision over the coming seasons. Recently the Scottish F.A. has recognised Busby's achievements by appointing him as the Scottish national team for this summer's World Cup Finals in Sweden.
