The man credited with idea of forming the Football League. Prior to 1888, the only competitive matches played by clubs were in the FA Cup. Once knocked out of the FA Cup, clubs only had friendly matches to look forward to. With the Football League, clubs were guaranteed a fixed number of competitive matches over the course of the season. William McGregor, whose club, Aston Villa, were one of the 12 founder members, became the first President of the Football League. |
