Γίνεται η απονομή των πρώτων Αθλητικών Όσκαρ με την ονομασία “Laureus Sports Awards” στο πριγκηπάτο του Μονακό από τον πρίγκηπα Αλβέρτο. Αθλητής της χρονιάς ο Αμερικανός γκόλφερ Tiger Woods, αθλήτρια της χρονιάς η Αμερικανίδα πρωταθλήτρια του στίβου Marion Jones, καλύτερη ομάδα η Manchester United, καλύτερος πρωτοεμφανιζόμενος ο Ισπανός γκόλφερ Sergio Garcia, “επιστροφή” της χρονιάς ο Αμερικανός ποδηλάτης Lance Armstrong, προσφορά στον αθλητισμό ο Βραζιλιάνος Pele. Το βραβείο για αθλητές με ειδικές ανάγκες απονέμεται στην Louise Sauvage
