Κυκλοφορεί το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Beach Boys “Surfin’ Safari”. Στο εξώφυλλο φαίνεται το συγκρότημα να κρατάει μία σανίδα σερφ, ένα θέμα το οποίο θα επαναληφθεί στα επόμενα δύο άλμπουμ “Surfin’ USA” και “Surfer Girl”, σε μία περίοδο που 30.000 Καλιφορνέζοι κάνουν σερφ στις παραλίες. Ο Dennis Wilson, ιδρυτής του συγκροτήματος, έχει ήδη ηχογραφήσει στις 3/10/1961 την σονάτα “Surfin”, η οποία στηρίχθηκε στην κίνηση, την ελευθερία και τον ήχο του σέρφ και αποτέλεσε την βάση για τον γνωστό ήχο των Beach Boys. Οι όροι “surf music”, “surf culture”, “surf rock” περιγράφουν μία τάση, που εκφράζεται και από τον ήχο και τον ρυθμό του παραδοσιακού ρεμπέτικου Μισιρλού, που πρωτοτραγουδήθηκε από τον Μιχάλη Πατρίνο το 1927 και μετά από τον Νίκο Ρουμπάνη το 1941, και θα συμπεριληφθεί στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ των Beach Boys “Surfin’ USA” (1963), ενώ θα ακουστεί και σαν soundtrack στην ταινία Pulp Fiction του Κουέντιν Ταραντίνο καθώς και στα γήπεδα και την τελετή λήξης των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων της Αθήνας το 2004
“Surfin’ Safari”, the debut album by the Beach Boys is released. The cover shows the group with a “surf board”, a theme which will be repeated in the following two albums of next year, “Surfin’ USA”, and “Surfer Girl”, at a time when 30,000 Californians surf at the beaches. Brian Wilson, founder of the group, on 3/10/1961, records “Surfin” based on a sonata, he attempted to compose, inspired by the move, the freedom and the sound of surfing. This attempt to celebrate this hobby and the lifestyle which had developed around it in Southern California will lead to the famous “Beach Boys sound”. Surf music, surf culture, surf rock, etc, describe a main stream, part of which will be the Greek song “Misirlou”, a traditional rebetiko, first performed in 1927 by Mihalis Patrinos, later in 1941 by Nick Roubanis which will appear in the second Beach Boys album “Surfin’ USA (1963), heard as a soundtrack of the film “Pulp Fiction” of Quentin Tarantino and widely heard on venues and the closing ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games
