Ο Ούγγρος συγγραφέας και εφευρέτης Wolfgang von Kempelen πεθαίνει σε ηλικία 70 ετών. Έγινε διάσημος με την κατασκευή του “Τούρκου”, ενός αυτοματισμού παιξίματος σκακιού, ο οποίος απεδείχθη ότι ήταν απάτη, αφού στην ουσία ένας παίκτης κρυμμένος μέσα στο κουτί κάτω από την σκακιέρα, κινούσε μέσω ενός συστήματος με γρανάζια, μία κούκλα ντυμένη με ρόμπα και τουρμπάνι που κρατούσε μία τούρκικη πίπα. Ο μηχανισμός δημιουργήθηκε για να εντυπωσιάσει την αυτοκράτειρα Μαρία Τερέζα και πολλά χρόνια αργότερα, τον Απρίλιο του 1836, θα περιγραφεί από τον Edgar Allan Poe στο δοκίμιο με τίτλο “Maelzel’s Chess Player”, από τον Johann Nepomuk Maelzel που θα το αγοράσει το 1817, δεκατρία χρόνια μετά τον θάνατο του Kempelen.
Wolfgang von Kempelen, the Hungarian author and inventor, dies at the age of 70. He became famous for the construction of “The Turk”, a chess playing automation, later revealed to be a hoax, as it was in fact a mechanical illusion that allowed a human chess master hiding in a box under the chess board to move a model doll dressed in Turkish robes and a turban holding a long Turkish pipe by the means of a clockwork mechanism. The machine was created in order to impress the Empress Maria Theresa and many years later, in April 1836, will be described in an essay by Edgar Allan Poe, titled “Maelzel’s Chess Player”, after Johann Nepomuk Maelzel, who will acquire it in 1817, thirteen years after Kempelen’s death.
