Γεννιέται η Ολυμπιακή Αεροπορία, ο επίσημος εθνικός αερομεταφορέας της Ελλάδας, και την ίδια μέρα λαμβάνει χώρα η πρώτη πτήση. Πιλότος είναι ο Παύλος Ιωαννίδης, μετέπειτα πρόεδρος του ιδρύματος Ωνάση. Επιθυμία του Αριστοτέλη Ωνάση ήταν να αντιγράψει το σήμα των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων με τους 5 κύκλους οι οποίοι συμβολίζουν τις 5 ηπείρους, αλλά η ΔΟΕ το απαγόρεψε και έτσι προστέθηκε ένας έκτος κύκλος για την Ελλάδα.
51-year-old Aristotle Onassis, one of the richest shipping magnates of the 20th century, founds Olympic Airways, later Olympic Airlines, the official Greek national carrier, when buying in the beginning of the same year TAE (Technical and Aeronautical Exploitations) for 7 million US dollars. Onassis wanted to copy the five coloured rings of the Olympic emblem, but the International Olympic Committee claimed the rights to the emblem, so a new, six ring logo was introduced. The first five rings stand for the five continents, while the sixth stands for Greece.
