O Γιώργος Αμερικάνος πεθαίνει σε ηλικία 71 ετών, μετά από τρία χρόνια σοβαρών προβλημάτων υγείας εξαιτίας διπλού εγκεφαλικού επεισοδίου. Ο Παγκόσμιος Αμερικάνος (που κέρδισε αυτό το προσωνύμιο παίζοντας στη μικτή κόσμου) μεγαλούργησε με τα χρώματα της ΑΕΚ και της Εθνικής Ελλάδας. Ήταν ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους σε προσφορά μπασκετμπολίστες της ΑΕΚ η οποία τον απέκτησε από τη ΧΑΝ Νικαίας. Κατέκτησε 6 πρωταθλήματα Ελλάδος με την ΑΕΚ (1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970), ενώ αναδείχθηκε 2 φορές πρώτος σκόρερ του ελληνικού πρωταθλήματος (1965, 1968). Ήταν ο ηγέτης της ομάδας όταν αγωνίστηκε στο Final Four του Κυπέλλου Πρωταθλητριών του 1965-1966 στην Ιταλία και όταν στις 4/4/1968 κατέκτησε το Κύπελλο Κυπελλούχων το 1968 απέναντι στη Σλάβια Πράγας σημειώνοντας 29 πόντους.
Giorgos Amerikanos, a legendary former player of AEK and of the Greek national team, dies at the age of 71 after a three-year battle against consecutive strokes. Amerikanos started his glorious career as a shooting guard with YMCA Nikaia, before moving to AEK Athens. A six-time Greek League champion and a two-time leading scorer of that competition, he led the AEK to the first edition of the then European Champions' Cup Final Four, which was held in 1966 in Milan and Bologna, where AEK finished fourth. Two years later Amerikanos, bagged 29 points in the European Cup Winners' Cup final against Slavia Prague, making AEK the first Greek team to win a European trophy. Amerikanos played 68 games with the Greek senior's national team, averaging 15.8 points and participated at the 1961 and the 1965 European Championships. He also played for Apollon Patras, Larissa, Egaleo and Pera Tatavla, while as a coach he led AEK to the Greek Cup final in 1978.
