Ο 42χρονος Άρθουρ Γουίν εκδίδει το πρώτο σταυρόλεξο. Ο Βρετανός εφευρέτης μετανάστευσε στην Αμερική στην ηλικία των 19 ετών. Αρχικά δούλεψε στην εφημερίδα “Pittsburgh Press” και μετά στην “New York World”, όπου εισήγαγε το σταυρόλεξο σε σχήμα διαμαντιού για την Κυριακάτική έκδοση. Παρότι στην αρχή δεν υπήρχαν αναφορές στον αθλητισμό, τα επόμενα χρόνια οι ερωτήσεις πάνω σε αθλητικά θα γίνουν πολύ δημοφιλείς.
42-year-old Arthur Wynne publishes the first crossword puzzle. The British born inventor emigrated to the United States at the age of 19. He initially worked on the “Pittsburgh Press” and later on the “New York World” newspaper, where he introduced the diamond shaped puzzle for the “Fun Section” of the Sunday edition, which he called a “World-Cross Puzzle”. Although the first puzzle had no references on sports, the following years, questions on sports will become very popular.
