Στον Ευαγγελισμό, στην κοιλάδα των Τεμπών, στις 23:20 σημειώνεται μετωπική σύγκρουση της αμαξοστοιχίας IC 62 με 352 επιβαίνοντες που είχε αναχωρήσει από Αθήνα προς Θεσσαλονίκη και εμπορευματικής αμαξοστοιχίας που κατέβαινε προς Αθήνα με τραγικό απολογισμό 57 νεκρών και 85 τραυματιών. Ανάμεσα στα θύματα και ο 22χρονος ποδοσφαιριστής Ιορδάνης Αδαμάκης, προς τιμήν του οποίου τα αποδυτήρια της ομάδας της Ρόδου θα πάρουν το όνομά του. Την 1/3, ο Πρωθυπουργός, Κωνσταντίνος Μητσοτάκης, θα κηρύξει τριήμερο πένθος με αποτέλεσμα οι ποδοσφαιρικές αναμετρήσεις της ημιτελικής φάσης του κυπέλλου Ελλάδος Ολυμπιακός-ΑΕΚ και ΠΑΣ Λαμία-ΠΑΟΚ της ιδίας ημέρας να αναβληθούν.
