Πεθαίνει σε ηλικία 78 ετών ο Γάλλος Andre Michelin. Το 1889, με τον μικρότερό του αδερφό, Edouard, ίδρυσε την Michelin Tyre Company στο Clermont-Ferrand. Για να επιταχύνει την αλλαγή ελαστικών, που διαρκούσε περίπου 3 ώρες, εφηύρε τα “αποσπόμενα ελαστικά”, που πια δεν χρειάζονταν να είναι κολλημένα στην ζάντα αλλά ήταν πιασμένα με σφιγκτήρες. Το 1894, κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης Universal and Colonial Exposition στη Λυών, μία ντάνα με ελαστικά που έμοιαζε με την φιγούρα ενός ανθρώπου έδωσε την ιδέα στον Edouard και ο Andre ανέθεσε στον Marius Rossillon, γνωστό ως O’ Galop, να δημιουργήσει τον “Bibendum”, το “Ανθρωπάκι της Michelin”, ενός από τα παλαιότερα σήματα στον κόσμο, το όνομα του οποίου προήλθε από τις “Ωδές του Ορατίου”. Το 1900, ο Andre έκδοσε τον “Οδηγό της Michelin” με σκοπό να προωθήσει τον τουρισμό με αυτοκίνητο, υποστηρίζοντας έτσι και την κατασκευή των δικών του ελαστικών.
Andre Michelin, the French industrialist, dies aged 78. With his younger brother, Edouard, he founded the Michelin Tyre Company in Clermont-Ferrand in 1889. In order to speed up flat tyre repair, which took almost three hours, he invented “detachable tyres” so there was no need for them to be glued to the rim but to hold it with clamps. In 1894, during the Universal and Colonial Exposition in Lyon, a stack of tires suggested to Edouard the figure of a man and Andre assigned to Marius Rossillon, popularly known as O’ Galop, to create “Bibendum”, the Michelin Man, one of the world’s oldest trademarks and his name was taken from Horace’s Odes (book I, ode XXXVII, line 1). In 1900, Andre published the “Michelin Guide” to promote tourism by car thereby supporting his tyre manufacturing operation.
