Ο Michael Schumacher κάνει την πρώτη του εμφάνιση μετά τον τραυματισμό του (11/7 στο Silverstone της Αγγλίας) στο Grand Prix της Μαλαισίας με νικητή τον Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) και δεύτερο τον Mika Hakkinen (McLaren Mercedes). Δυο ώρες μετά τον τερματισμό, η ομάδα της Ferrari θα τιμωρηθεί λόγω κακής χρήσης των διαστάσεων των αεροτομών, με αποτέλεσμα ο Hakkinen να ανακηρυχθεί παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής. Η Ferrari θα κάνει ένσταση στις 22/10 και στις 23/10 θα την κερδίσει. Έτσι η Ferrari και ο Irvine θα πάρουν την πρώτη θέση
