Η ομάδα της McLaren τιμωρείται από το Παγκόσμιο Συμβούλιο Μηχανοκίνητου Αθλητισμού με πρόστιμο $100 εκ. και με μηδενισμό στο Πρωτάθλημα των κατασκευαστών όταν βρέθηκαν στην κατοχή της ομάδας εμπιστευτικά τεχνικά στοιχεία που ανήκαν στην αντίπαλο Ferrari. Ο μηχανικός της Ferrari, Nigel Stepney, κατηγορήθηκε ότι προμήθευσε τα στοιχεία αυτά στον αρχιμηχανικό της McLaren, Mike Coughlan, μερικούς μήνες πριν και ο δοκιμαστής Pedro de la Rosa τα προώθησε στον οδηγό Fernando Alonso
The McLaren Formula One racing team is fined $100 million for possession of confidential technical data belonging to rival Ferrari. The team also was stripped of its points in the constructors’ standings after the ruling by the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC). Ferrari mechanic Nigel Stepney, was accused of supplying those documents to McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan earlier this year and Pedro de la Rosa forwarded them to driver Fernando Alonso
