Ο Ουαλός Walter Clopton Wingfield επινοεί το τένις στο γκαζόν (lawn tennis) ονομάζοντας το Sphairistike (Σφαιριστική) σε μια προσπάθεια να αποδώσει την κίνηση του πετάγματος της σφαίρας. Σύμφωνα με τους Times του Λονδίνου, το 1927 ο όρος, λόγω της δυσκολίας στην προφορά του, θα αντικατασταθεί πολύ γρήγορα από τον όρο “τένις”, που προέρχεται από την γαλλική προειδοποίηση “tenez” (πάρε) που προφέρετε από τον παίκτη που σερβίρει.
Welsh Walter Clopton Wingfield invents lawn tennis, naming it Sphairistike, the Greek tern for "skill at playing with the ball". According to the Times of London in 1927 the name will dropped very quickly because it will be proven so difficult to pronounce and “tennis” will be adopted from the French word “tenez” (catch) which is announced by the server.
