Παραολυμπιακοί Αγώνες
Ο Γερμανός νευρολόγος και ιδρυτής των Παραολυμπιακών Αγώνων Sir Ludwig “Poppa” Guttmann πεθαίνει σε ηλικία 80 ετών. Το 1944, η Βρετανική κυβέρνηση του ζήτησε να ιδρύσει το Εθνικό Κέντρο για Κακώσεις της Σπονδυλικής Στήλης στο νοσοκομείο του Stoke Mandeville στο Buckinghamshire. Επειδή πίστευε ότι ο αθλητισμός είναι μία μορφή θεραπείας, στις 28/7/1948 οργάνωσε τους World Wheelchair and Amputee Games για αθλητές με αναπηρία, οι οποίοι το 1960 για πρώτη φορά διοργανώθηκαν εκτός Βρετανίας, στη Ρώμη, και που αργότερα έγιναν γνωστοί ως οι Πρώτοι Παραολυμπιακοί Αγώνες.
Sir Ludwig “Poppa” Guttmann, the German neurologist, founder of the Paralympic Games dies at the age of 80. In 1944, he was asked by the British government to found the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. Since he believed that sport was a method of therapy, he organized on 28/7/1948 the World Wheelchair and Amputee Games for athletes with disabilities, which in 1960, were organized for the first time outside England, in Rome, and were later known as the 1st Paralympic Games.
