Ο Bobby Fisher ανακηρύσσεται παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής στο σκάκι νικώντας τον Boris Spassky 12.5-8.5 στο Ρέικιαβικ της Ισλανδίας. Ο αγώνας άρχισε την 1η Ιουλίου και τελειώνει μετά από 21 παρτίδες. Ο Fisher ήταν ο πρώτος που έσπασε ένα σερί 25ετίας σοβιετικού μονοπωλίου από το 1948 όταν ο Mikhail Botvinnik πήρε τον πρώτο μεταπολεμικό τίτλο. Από το 1937 παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής ήταν ο Alexander Alekhine, Ρώσος και αυτός αλλά πολιτογραφημένος Γάλλος, ο οποίος πέθανε το 1946
