Ο Φιλιππινέζος σκακιστής, πρόεδρος της FIDE (1982-1996) και Επίτιμος Πρόεδρος της FIDE (1996-2010), Florencio Campomanes πεθαίνει σε ηλικία 83 ετών από καρκίνο στις Φιλιππίνες. Ο “Campo”, όπως τον αποκαλούσαν οι φίλοι του, ήταν πολύ στενός φίλος με τον πρώην πρόεδρο των Φιλιππίνων Ferdinand Marcos και βοήθησε την FIDE να αναπτυχθεί με την ένταξη 50 χωρών μελών.
Florencio Campomanes, the Filippino chess player, FIDE president (1982-1996) and Honorary President (1996-2010) dies at the age of 83 after a protracted boat with cancer in the Philippines. “Campo”, the name his friends use to call him, was a close friend to Ferdinand Marcos, the former Philippine President, and helped FIDE to grow significantly by adding about 50 member nations.
