Ο Γιώργος Κολοκυθάς πεθαίνει από ανακοπή καρδιάς σε ηλικία 68 ετών. Ως παίκτης είχε αγωνιστεί στο Σπόρτιγκ και τον Παναθηναϊκό. Με τον Παναθηναϊκό κατέκτησε 4 πρωταθλήματα το (1967, 1969, 1971, 1972), ενώ το 1969 αγωνίστηκε στα ημιτελικά του Κυπέλλου Κυπελλούχων και το 1972 στα ημιτελικά του Κυπέλλου Πρωταθλητριών. Στο ελληνικό πρωτάθλημα σημείωσε 3.529 πόντους με ρεκόρ τους 51 την περίοδο 1966-1967. Τις χρονιές 1964, 1966 και 1967 αναδείχτηκε πρώτος σκόρερ του ελληνικού πρωταθλήματος. Με την Εθνική Ελλάδος αγωνίστηκε σε 90 αγώνες και σκόραρε 1807 πόντους. Έχει 25 συμμετοχές σε Πανευρωπαϊκά πρωταθλήματα με την Εθνική και έχει σημειώσει 492 πόντους (μ.ο. 19,7). Το 1967 στο 15ο Πανευρωπαϊκό Πρωτάθλημα Μπάσκετ στο Ελσίνκι ο Γιώργος Κολοκυθάς αναδεικνύεται πρώτος σκόρερ της διοργάνωσης με 206 πόντους (22.9 μ. ο.) στην πρώτη διάκριση Έλληνα παίκτη σε διεθνές επίπεδο. Στο Ευρωμπάσκετ του 1969 στην Καζέρτα ήταν πάλι πρώτος σκόρερ με 159 (μ.ο. 22.7). Στις 4/5/1971 αποσύρθηκε από την Εθνική Ελλάδος σκοράροντας 35 πόντους εναντίον της Σκωτίας. Μετά την καριέρα του ως αθλητής έγινε έφορος και στη συνέχεια πρόεδρος των εθνικών ομάδων, με τις οποίες ασχολούνταν μέχρι και σήμερα.
George Kolokythas dies of cardiac arrest at the age of 68. As a player he played with the Sporting and Panathinaikos. With Panathinaikos, he won four championship titles (1967, 1969, 1971, 1972), while in 1969 he played in the semifinals of the Cup Winners Cup in 1972 and the semifinals of the Champions League. He scored 3,529 points in the Greek league with a record of 51 in the period 1966-1967. In 1964, 1966 and 1967 he was the top scorer of the Greek league. With the National Team he competed in 90 matches and scored 1807 points, having 25 appearances in the European Championship and scoring 492 points (19.7 avg). In 1967, during the 15th European Basketball Championship in Helsinki he was the top scorer of the competition with 206 points (22.9 m v), receiving the first distinction of a Greek player at international level. In Eurobasket 1969 in Caserta he, one more, was the top scorer with 159 (average 22.7). On 04/05/1971 he retired from the National Team scoring 35 points against Scotland. After his career as an athlete he became a curator and then president of the national teams, a post he held until his death.
