Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες
Σε ηλικία 36 ετών, και μετά από πέντε Ολυμπιάδες, ο Κερκυραίος παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής της κολυμβητής Σπύρος Γιαννιώτης κατακτά το ασημένιο μετάλλιο στον τελικό της Μαραθώνιας κολύμβησης των 10 χιλ. στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Ρίο. Σε έναν από τους επικότερους τελικούς των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων (όχι μόνο του Ρίο) ο Γιαννιώτηςι περνά τη γραμμή τερματισμού πρώτος, αλλά δεν ακουμπά τον πίνακα του τερματισμού, όπως προβλέπεται, με αποτέλεσμα να πάρει το ασημένιο μετάλλιο καταγράφοντας τον ίδιο χρόνο (1.52.59) με τον Ολλανδό Φέρι Βέερτμαν σύμφωνα με το photo finish.
Spyros Gianniotis of Greece wins the silver medal at the men’s 10 km marathon swim at Copacabana during the Rio Olympics. Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands takes the gold in a photo finish. Gianniotis, 36, appeared to cross the finish line first, but the Dutchman touched the timing pad before him. Both were credited with the same time, 1 hour, 52 minutes, 59.8 seconds. Gianniots has represented Greece at five consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 2000. In 2011 he became world champion in the 10 km open water at the world championships in Shanghai. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London he was 4th at the 10 km marathon swim, missing the bronze medal for only 5 seconds.
